AN AUTHENTIC EDUCATION TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

By Ansy Joseph

The great Greek philosopher Aristotle said: “The roots of education are bitter but the fruit is sweet.” In the case of the Custer / ESL / GED Adult Community School Inc. we are led to believe that every word of that saying reflects a certain truth. Recently, I had a conversation with Mr. Laurore Herard and the Rev. Joel Buissereth, the two main initiators of this school regarding the effectiveness of this God sent school.

Rev. Joel Buissereth stated “An authentic education to make a difference” to introduce what he sees as a mandate that God has entrusted to Mr. Laurore and himself. As servants of God and members of the Haitian Ministry Theophile Church in Christ, they believe that it is important to build a school in Atlanta to educate the less fortunate.

The Custer ESL/GED Adult Community School Inc is recognized by the State of Georgia with a license to operate. The school has been operating at Theophile church located at 930 Custer Avenue helping the population of Atlanta and its surrounding for the past two years. According to Mr. Herard, the church as a religious institution must be equipped and ready to teach the tripartite man. Mr. Herard indicated “education is the only thing that, after salvation, can elevate man to reach its full potential socially, economically, spiritually and intellectually.” The most effective way to make a difference in someone’s life is through education.

A Real Need!

According to a recent study, Dekalb County has about 85,000 inhabitants who have not reach the minimum required education, or their high school diploma (GED). This phenomenon has a direct impact on our local government due to the demand for social assistance. The Department of Education has encouraged the above teachers in a recent gathering to proceed with the initiative and to continue fighting illiteracy.

A Responsibility and a Challenge!
Since the earthquake that destroyed half of Haiti on January 12, 2010, the Custer / ESL / GED Adult Community School Inc. have had to do some readjustment in order to accommodate a great number of our brothers and sisters from Haiti. Not only must they learn English, but also we must equip them to cope and adjust in a new system. This is a tremendous responsibility where as Christians/Haitians we take on the challenge of performing our duty to assist our fellow brothers and sisters all with a spirit of humility and compassion.

According to Rev. Buissereth and Bro Laurore Herard, managing the runaway success of Custer / ESL / GED Adult Community School is an ongoing concern. “From twenty students in 2008 to sixty today, the question of logistics becomes indeed the main problem that we must find a solution” Says the Reverend. Sisters Jésumène Smith, Bro Laurore Herard, and Rev. Joel Buissereth provide training for students voluntarily. Other people like Bro Samuel Buissereth, Sr. Rebecca Tercy, Sr Anne-Suze Charlestin, Bro Gardel Buissereth, Sr Darling Joseph act as alternate if needed.

We are forever grateful to “The Center for Pan Asian community Services (CPACS) “for providing us materials and all kind of assistances for our teachers. Our gratitude also goes toward “The Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta (RRISA)” for providing assistance for the bus driver. That allows us to bring our recently arrived students back and forth to school. However, the school needs material equipments such as: projectors, sound equipment, computers, computer lab…etc.

We are keeping “hope alive” and we are waiting for a few government agencies who promised to help this school build a better community. Reverend Buissereth indicated that “this school goes beyond preparing people for their high school diploma; if someone is able to read and understand the word of God, he/she can become a good Christian and a model citizen”. This is the great challenge of this initiative.

CUSTER ESL/GED Adult Community School Inc.

Lord, increase our Faith!

On January 12, 2010 Haiti was struck by a very powerful earthquake. The Haitian Ministry Theophile Church In Christ mission team in Atlanta,Georgia BIG FAITH MISSION has put together some time and effort and went to Haïti on June 1, 2010. The BIG FAITH MISSION gave away clothes, toiletries, medical supplies, medical aid and most importantly the love of Jesus to those in need.

The team was composed of one very talented and humble Haitian medical Doctor, four nurses from the US; two of them Haitian born. Two nurses from Haiti, one of the US Church Pastor, one Evangelist/Nurse, one Evangelist Volunteer, five Nurse technicians , local volunteers and a Pastor from Haiti.

In the three areas we served over 600 people in three days. The team set up clinics in L’Acul, Darbonne, (Leogane) and Jacquet, (Croix-des-Bouquets). The first day, the team set up a clinic outside a church. The crowd was so large, they had to use a tent made out of coconut leaves for registration and triage.

The second day at Darbonne (Leogane), there were 120 houses built by a Christian organization, they used three of the houses with the tenants’ permission to set up a clinic, registration and humanitarian aid .

The third day, at Jacquet (Croix-des-Bouquets) which was the most needed area of the three. The children were the sickest and the poorest.

The people were treated with fevers, infections, skin rashes, gastrointestinal problems, parasites and other maladies. Their prescriptions were filled out free of charge from the medications stocks.

At Jacquet (Croix-Des-Bouquets), the team had 140 families registered and each family had two to three members per family, and according to them every one had an illness and needed to see the Doctor. Fortunately, the team managed to see the sickest of the sick.

The majority of the people who came, left with medications if needed and with a bag donated by Southern Crescent Hospital for Specialty Care in Riverdale, Georgia with toiletries, clothes and some with money as well.

Big Faith Mission…
